From now on, William Lepeska ought to have distant regard for Anna Kournikova. Extremely distant.

The homeless man accused of stalking the former tennis starlet was ordered Wednesday to stay at least 1,000 feet from her -- if he ever leaves jail.

Lepeska, 40, is in a psychiatric unit in Miami on $250,000 bond. He is accused of stalking her, two counts of battery on police officers and resisting arrest. He could face up to 30 years in jail.

I was absolutely shocked and fearful, and I was very much concerned for my safety," Kournikova, 23, testified. It was very frightening and scary and just knowing there is someone out there who's obsessive."

She said she has hired bodyguards for the first time and added security at her home since Lepeska's arrest.

Lepeska did time in a Wisconsin prison for stabbing a man sleeping in a university student union coffeehouse and telling police he was a slave to an evil that he could not escape" in 1995.

Before court convened, he told reporters he was in love with Spice Girl Melanie Brown for five years and repeatedly wrote her.

But finally, I said the heck with her, moving on to greener pastures," said Lepeska, who acted as his own attorney.

At the hearing, he acknowledged past mental illness. One thing's for certain: Anna was not crazy for him.

I thought Anna possibly had some sincere regard for me," he said. I had all sorts of delusional assumptions about Anna."

When the judge called his actions stalking behavior," Lepeska interrupted to say, Proper courting behavior."

Is this guy nuts? Lepeska said he might use an insanity defense for his criminal trial.

Which makes one wonder: If you are sane enough to use an insanity defense, can you really be considered insane?
