The number of online gamblers still has potential to grow significantly, according to a new study commissioned by the casino company Aspinall.com and conducted by the market research firm Greenfield Online.

The study, which is based on the responses of 1,000 experienced Internet users, shows that 63% of the respondents had visited an online gambling-related site - lottery, bingo, sports betting or casino - but only 13% had wagered for real. Security issues are still a major concern, with 56% of those who had visited gambling sites saying they were worried about the safety of using credit cards or receiving their winnings online.

The survey also revealed that online gambling is breaking down the gender divide - it seems that women feel more confident playing table games in an online environment. For example the female to male divide of those who play blackjack is 32% female to 68% male in traditional casinos but evenly split in online blackjack. Likewise, while 88% of the women who had visited offline casinos had used slot machines, just 24% of female online casino visitors had played the online equivalent of the machines.
